Laval has been growing over the past decades from a small farm town to a whole metropolis. The inclusion of the Montreal metro has allowed it to grow into a city of over half a million residents. This rise in population has also created a rise in real-estate developments, which have sprung up all over the South Shore and the North Shore of Montreal. As the city grows, it is important to remember that the city’s infrastructure does not always grow at the same pace as the developments.
Some of the infrastructures such as main sewers are now over 30 years old. Therefore a drainage system, which might be conceived to receive the storm water runoff of a few dozen houses, is now receiving the water runoff of several hundred houses.
This causes clogged drains and flooding which can cause irreparable damage.
Furthermore, new developments that have been built are not always built with the strongest or most reliable materials. The fact that many plumbing companies will use products that they know will have a shorter lifespan but that costs less means that each company has their own way and each development can be different.
An aging metropolis
That said, Laval is aging and as it ages so does its homes. The older the homes get, the more pipes they starts to have. Although nowhere near the situation with the pipe webs that are in certain parts of Montreal, Laval is starting to have areas, which have the beginnings of pipe webs. Another common problem encountered is home repairs or unlicensed jobs that will give even the most experienced plumber a headache.
Since Laval is an island, it has a many areas that are prone to flooding. If working in an area near water, a plumber is encouraged to offer flood-protecting measures. Impermeable foundation guards can be a solution for damaged foundations. A good and solid water pump should allow for any water to be pumped out. Many homeowners do not know, but the newer water pumps have warning signals, which will alert the homeowner in case of a problem.
It is surprising that Laval has so few water heater guards. Theses guards stop water from flowing all over the place. It is surprising that so few houses have such things since holes in water heaters cause so much damage and that in reality, a simple guard can stop or greatly reduce the water damage.
